Abbott to D.C.: Stop sending our gas taxes to other states

As Congress continues to grapple with a long-term transportation funding bill, Gov. Greg Abbott has one other thing he wants lawmakers to tackle: the diversion of Texas gas tax revenues to other states.

Texas was the only state in 2013 to receive fewer transportation dollars than its residents sent to Washington D.C. in gas tax revenues. According to the Federal Transportation Administration, Texas received 95 cents back for every $1 it contributed in gas taxes.

“Texas’ taxpayer dollars should be used to continue building Texas’ economic growth by address Texas’ transportation needs,” Abbott said in a letter to the state’s congressional delegation.
